Most finance documents look ugly — and it’s not your fault

Typography matters more than you think.

Here’s how to fix it in 5 minutes.

Bad typography makes documents harder to read

But nobody teaches accountants how to format text.

So we stick with whatever Word gives us.

You don’t need fancy fonts or design skills

Just a few smart tweaks to how your body text looks —

because that’s what people read most.

1. Font size: 10–14 points

Every font is different, so don’t just trust the number.

Aim for “comfortable to read".

2. Line spacing: 1.2 to 1.4

Single spacing = too tight.

1.5 or double = too loose.

1.2–1.4 is the sweet spot.

3. Alignment: Left, not Justified

Justified text creates uneven word gaps.

Left-aligned is easier on the eye — and the brain.

4. Line length: ~65 characters

That’s about 2½ alphabets per line.

To get it right on A4, increase your side margins to 30–35mm.

That’s it. Just 4 quick changes.

No new software.

No design jargon.

Just better-looking, easier-to-read documents.
